Today was our first actual day of clinic for our second year (wahoo). I was a little nervous to get started because I wasn't sure if I remembered all the clinic "rules". So I decided to have a patient come in that I have already seen and a patient who I know doesn't have a long health history. :) He was actual my toughest patient last semester (as far as tenacious calculus), and I kind of forgot about that until he came in this morning. Everything went great until it came time for scaling, this was the point when I realized how hard of a time I had last semester at removing his calculus. He was three quads a class five and one quad a class two. So I started with the class two quad. I felt like it was going pretty well on his anterior teeth and I felt as if they were clean ( he had tons and tons of calculus on his lower anteriors) so I decided to go back to the premolars and molars and it was difficult to tell if it was calculus I was feeling or if it was the anatomy of his teeth, but most of what I was feeling was calculus. So I kept working, and at one point I thought I cannot keep scaling this same tooth, so I had my instructor come over and she rec. that I get out and use my perio files, which was all new to me. So she sat by me for a few minutes and taught me to use them, and WOW they sure do help a lot and they were fun to use. So this was a huge learning moment for me. Then a little while later she helped me with my Gracey's, and this was another huge learning moment for me. I was so glad that Liz helped me today with this specific patient. I only scaled this one quad, but I really learned a lot. She also taught me that if a specific area is bleeding a lot that means there is probably calculus.
My afternoon appt. went okay. I wanted to scale at least one quad, but I didn't get to it, due to her extensive health history and I sucked it up on x rays ( I hate it when that happens ) :). I was able to get to OHI, which was okay. I am excited for this patient to come back because she is so excited to get her teeth cleaned and so excited and anxious to take better care of them, which makes my job exciting because I get to help her with those things.
