10.2.12
This morning I was able to finish my patient who I saw the first day of clinic, I was able to finish three quads of a class five and it was hard work, this patient calculus is very tenacious, but I was able to get it off with the help of my perio files ( love those things). Everything went smoothly I just wish I could of been a little bit faster. Working on my speed is something I need to improve on.
This afternoon was the preview to see how my mockboard patient was going to handle getting his teeth cleaned, and a preview for me to see how tenacious his calculus is... Well I found out my patient is very tough for how deep I was going in his pockets and scaling. He never flinched nor did he want to be numb, which was great for me. The problem with this patient though is his gums bleed like crazy, and I mean crazy!!! I had to hold gauze in his mouth while I scaled so it could absorb the blood so I didn't have to keep using my air/water. The calculus was not very tenacious and all it came right off ( so lucky me!) I lucked out with a good mockboard patient other than the bleeding, but we can work around that. One thing I learned today was how to irrigate his gums with CHX rinse, I had never done this before so it was a new experience for me. All in all today was a great day!

Easy Day!
9.25.12
Well today was thankfully an easy day. After last week I needed one. Today I had a patient come in that I have never seen before, which is fun because it means I get to meet someone new. My patient came in and I was able to take her x rays and clean her teeth, she was a 1B so there is nothing really exciting to talk about. She was a very nice lady and she was in the nursing program so I felt like we had a few things in common school wise to talk about, but anyways I don't have much else to say other than it we good and I don't have to see any patients this afternoon because we have a lab.

What a HECK of a Day!!
9.18.12
The stress of today started yesterday as both of my patients who were husband and wife canceled due to so family emergency, which is fine, stuff happens, but that leaves me at 3:30 on Monday afternoon trying to find two patients to come in :( So I go to the resource list and seriously call at least 20 different people to come in. FINALLY I get two people, one girl who said she could come in the morning at 8:30, ( I agreed to that because I was sick of calling people) and the other who said she could come in the afternoon.
Well Tuesday morning 8:30 rolls around and my patient still has not shown up, 8:35, I called my patient and there was NO answer! So, we all know what that means... She is not coming! So go to the resource list again and start calling people... Not having any luck, I text my husband, and tell him I have no patient, so him being the sweet guy that he is, leaves work and comes to be my patient. So it worked out. Its not over yet.... Then as I am walking my husband to check out, guess who is calling on my phone... Yep that's right, my afternoon pt calling to say she can't come in today! UGH! I was so mad! So luckily, my good friend Laken was stuck with me yesterday calling patients as well, and she had someone who really wanted to come in, so I called and asked him if he could come in on short notice and he said he could!! Whew!
This patient had been to the clinic before, so I was looking at his chart and he had a "Fun" health history!! (just what I love ;)), So as I was all prepared for this patient, and going to bring him back, Mr. Salamon, informs me that I am going to be seeing his wife instead! Well, his wife has the same "fun" health history as her husband. Her unlike her husband was suffering from Alzheimer's. I have never had to work on someone suffering from this, so it was a new experience for me. Not only did she have Alzheimer's, she was diabetic, had heart arrhythmia's, and a few other conditions. It was really sad! So, when I went to take her blood glucose, she kind of got mad at me, because I exp. to her that we needed to do this because she was diabetic, but she told me she wasn't because she couldn't remember. Luckily her husband was back in the operatory with us otherwise we wouldn't of got anything accomplished. She was the nicest, and sweetest little old lady, but boy did she tell her husband what was up! Ha ha. I was getting a kick out of the two of them.
She only had enough teeth for three quads, so one of her quads was a 5, and the other quads were 2s. I told my pt, she had the option to get numb, but she did not want too, and she really needed too! She was flinching when I was probing! So as I began to scale her teeth ( which were so decayed and breaking down) I didn't know what to scale, because a lot of it was decay, and she also had a lot of plaque, so it was hard to determine what I should be scaling. My patient was not very happy to be in my chair at all, so wanted to be done so her husband could take her to lunch. ha ha! I didn't know how to approach this, because I didn't want to scale anything I shouldn't... I had my instructor come over to help me and tell me what to scale, and she ended up telling me to just gently go around each tooth, to de-plaque. It was hard (given this specific pt, and the condition of her mouth)! I was trying to go as fast as I could, and I was trying to be very gently because everything I did was hurting her (but she didn't want to be numb). She kept asking me it I was done, and I had to keep telling her it would be a few min longer, then she would get mad at me ha ha.
It was a challenge that was for sure and it really tested my patience, but I turned out good and taught me a lot! I still have to scale one quad! So I will be seeing sweet MaryLoo another day!

Found a MOCKBOARD!!
9-11-12
Today my morning started out at 4:00 am when I heard my phone ringing, and of course it is my 8:00 patient, I didn't answer because I was still half a sleep and did not know what was going on, so I call him right back when I finally am awake, but he doesn't answer. So immediately am thinking this is not good, he is calling to cancel. So of course I can't go back to sleep, I am to concerned about who am I going to call to come in at 8:00. So when 7:00am came around I called my patient to see if he was coming or canceling, or what the deal was... Well he finally answered and told me he was still coming and that he accidentally called my number trying to call the airport.. Ugh!! I was a little upset because I missed out on a few hours of sleep, but glad he was still coming.
My 8:00 clock patient had in past years been classified as a class 3, which was a good thing for me, because class 3's are kind of tough to find. Anyways, he ended up being one quad a class 3 and two quads a class 2, which was great! I was excited to get cleaning teeth! :) I started with the class 3 quad, my patient had to get numb, so my instructor showed me how to give an injection. It was awesome! She made it look so easy and it definitely eased my nerves for when we have to practice injections in the upcoming weeks. My instructor taught me how to use my Gracey's more, and she taught me how to clean out a furcation. It was a great morning, even though it started out at 4:00am. :)
My afternoon patient was a patient who I had scheduled off the resource list. He had never been to our clinic before and apparently had been trying to get in for a cleaning the whole summer. He was excited to come in because he said it has been awhile since he has been to the dentist...Then it begins, I bring him back for his health history and immediately I could smell perio breath... I'm sure most of you know what that smells like and it's not good! :( So as I go take x-rays on him, and they are showing up on the computer screen as they are going through scanx, I was seeing big chunks of radio graphic calculus, and we all know what that means Wahoo!! Mockboard? So I go tell my instructor and she told me that by the x-rays he looked MOCKBOARD qualified! Wahoo, needless to say I was little excited, but I still had to check probe depths and a few other things to make sure. So I took a few extra PAs on him, and then brought him back to start the OD and to start probing! So as I start probing, blood starts oozing out of the gums... My probe depths were 4s, 5s, and a few 6s, but may be deeper due to calculus! It was very hard to see what my probe depths were because he was bleeding so badly. ( I haven't had a pt bleed this bad EVER)! After my probe depths I had to to go around and fill out a sheet that determined how much calculus was actually there. Then my instructor went around and did the same thing, my findings and her findings, were pretty close to each other, so needless to say... I kind of do know how to find calculus!! ha ha, this is something I have been working on. Anyways, it was a great day and I was EXTREMELY excited to find a mockboard patient.
