Today my morning started out at 4:00 am when I heard my phone ringing, and of course it is my 8:00 patient, I didn't answer because I was still half a sleep and did not know what was going on, so I call him right back when I finally am awake, but he doesn't answer. So immediately am thinking this is not good, he is calling to cancel. So of course I can't go back to sleep, I am to concerned about who am I going to call to come in at 8:00. So when 7:00am came around I called my patient to see if he was coming or canceling, or what the deal was... Well he finally answered and told me he was still coming and that he accidentally called my number trying to call the airport.. Ugh!! I was a little upset because I missed out on a few hours of sleep, but glad he was still coming.
My 8:00 clock patient had in past years been classified as a class 3, which was a good thing for me, because class 3's are kind of tough to find. Anyways, he ended up being one quad a class 3 and two quads a class 2, which was great! I was excited to get cleaning teeth! :) I started with the class 3 quad, my patient had to get numb, so my instructor showed me how to give an injection. It was awesome! She made it look so easy and it definitely eased my nerves for when we have to practice injections in the upcoming weeks. My instructor taught me how to use my Gracey's more, and she taught me how to clean out a furcation. It was a great morning, even though it started out at 4:00am. :)
My afternoon patient was a patient who I had scheduled off the resource list. He had never been to our clinic before and apparently had been trying to get in for a cleaning the whole summer. He was excited to come in because he said it has been awhile since he has been to the dentist...Then it begins, I bring him back for his health history and immediately I could smell perio breath... I'm sure most of you know what that smells like and it's not good! :( So as I go take x-rays on him, and they are showing up on the computer screen as they are going through scanx, I was seeing big chunks of radio graphic calculus, and we all know what that means Wahoo!! Mockboard? So I go tell my instructor and she told me that by the x-rays he looked MOCKBOARD qualified! Wahoo, needless to say I was little excited, but I still had to check probe depths and a few other things to make sure. So I took a few extra PAs on him, and then brought him back to start the OD and to start probing! So as I start probing, blood starts oozing out of the gums... My probe depths were 4s, 5s, and a few 6s, but may be deeper due to calculus! It was very hard to see what my probe depths were because he was bleeding so badly. ( I haven't had a pt bleed this bad EVER)! After my probe depths I had to to go around and fill out a sheet that determined how much calculus was actually there. Then my instructor went around and did the same thing, my findings and her findings, were pretty close to each other, so needless to say... I kind of do know how to find calculus!! ha ha, this is something I have been working on. Anyways, it was a great day and I was EXTREMELY excited to find a mockboard patient.
